Jelena is a visual artist whose work spans mostly painting and drawing, but often includes video and installation. She was born in Split, Croatia, she begins to draw and paint in her early twenties, eventually pursuing formal studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she earned her degree in painting. During the study, she participated in a student exchange program at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy.

Now based in Zagreb, Jelena's practice is rooted in figurative and surrealist traditions, often incorporating elements of Dada and conceptual art. Her work delves into themes of memory, identity, and the subconscious, utilizing layered symbolism and poetic titles. She is often inspired also by popular culture, literature, cinema and music.

What interests her is experience, memory, and intuition — descriptions of the sky, bones, big and small paintings, pirates, Italian canzoni, tangerines, dance, the dimensions of love and fear, sunrises and sunsets, tenderness, and the horizon. She’s curious about the movement of the body, the nature of understanding time and space, synchronicities, quantum theory, and pantheism. She’s drawn to the Renaissanceand Baroque periods, as well as classical paintiing techniques. Her work tries to understand how history, art history, and heritage can be woven into contemporary everyday life. She is fascinated by the uniqueness of individual experiences, the collective unconscious, and archetypes of memory and meaning. Mistakes also intrigue her — they often reveal unexpected beauty. That beauty appears in the cracks of everyday life, led by emotion, intuition, and memory.
